Love Rides the Rails was the first show directed and designed for the high school stage by Neil Truglio. It was presented in October of 2010.
"I saw the show as a two-dimensional storybook. The design is built around the idea that the characters were the most three-dimensional objects on stage, thus all backgrounds and foreground objects were made out of simple flats, painted to reflect the cartoon nature of the world in which the characters live. Bright colors adorn not only the set pieces, but are reflected in the costuming and lighting as well; bold blue skies, powerful orange sunsets, and even cartoon clouds decorating the cyclorama. The play is a traditional melodrama written in 1940 which turns the typical boy-meets-girl-boy-saves-girl storyline on it's end by making the women more empowered to save their men. We continued the modernization with current references and details designed to have the audience cheering, booing and hissing throughout. Teaching the students and the community about traditional melodrama was a great start to making a difference at a facility that had been lacking in theatre as educational tool for teaching history, philosophy and politics."
