Sons & Daughters is a new musical staged by Modest Arts which saw its premiere production at the Eisenhower Chapel in Denver, Colorado in June of 2016.
"The desire to create a stage musical based on the music of The Decemberists is something that I had been strategizing for a number of years. The production came together through the collaborative process of Modest Arts built around research and focused study to accurately understand and depict the events that immediately followed the tragedy of September 11th. The story of Sons & Daughters follows five couples as they cope with suffering, loss and the tough decisions that come from a nation at war."
The original production was designed around a white box with all locations projected. The stage was built on a rake in an effort to showcase the compositions to an audience that was oriented in a traditional chapel environment. The Eisenhower Chapel was selected as the inaugural performance space as it was an historic building in Denver that served as the chapel for the Air Force base. The show was restaged with its original cast in January of 2017 at RedLine Contemporary Art Center.
