"Urinetown is one of those shows that I absolutely loved staging, it's absolutely hilarious, well written and has an important message about the future of resources - specifically water consumption. The challenge with Urinetown is handling the constant location changes while also keeping the show upbeat and moving without giving the audience a break. We designed the show on three levels, the stage level, a mid level for Cladwell's office and a third level that was used as the underground hideout of the rebellion. With sliding walls, we were able to quickly change locations while having actors prepped and in their sets ready to go. The second challenge of the show is keeping the laughs consistently coming. I had seen the show in amateur presentations and found most directors landed a joke about every 2 minutes, I found it vital to have a bot, gag or joke about every thirty seconds and keep the audience in a constant state of rolling laughter throughout."
